Shoveling snow is great exercise!

I won't walk on the ice.  Among my many fears is the fear of falling. Falling from heights, into a lake, down the stairs, on the ice - whatever.  I don't want to fall!  I've done it a few times - it's not fun!

So, I'm looking for exercises during the winter that don't involve lots of money or falling.  That eliminates aerobics videos, by the way.  I am SO uncoordinated.  And, aerobic steps -- let's not go there.

I discovered that shoveling snow is great exercise.  Saturday, when it was light and fluffy, I shoveled for 45 minutes.  It was coming down so fast, you couldn't tell I had done anything when I was done, but I knew.

When I walked inside the house, my kids knew. I looked like the abominable snowman. I didn't realize I was caked in snow.  I did enjoy the exercise.

And, it isn't too dangerous an exercise, either.  Yes, there were a few hidden ice patches that almost threw me to the ground, but the snow was so pretty and light, I just couldn't imagine the fluffy stuff "doing me in."

So, today, in an effort to get more exercise, I had a simple assignment from my DH. He wanted me move a section of snow from one side of the driveway to another.  Simple.  Yeah.

The light, fluffy snow of yesterday, which weighed practically nothing, would've provided most weightlifters a decent workout.  Needless to say, I am not a weightlifter.  But, I was for about 20 minutes today.

Lift with your legs.

It still doesn't feel any lighter.  Imagine transporting ice bowling balls on a shovel. Half the time the big chunk of weighty snow and ice shifted and fell on the driveway.  That wasn't so bad, though. It usually broke it up into more manageable chunks.

I finished my job, helped clean off two other smaller parts, and my workout for today was finished. I think I'll feel it tomorrow, though.
