Bring Epiphany Home

Today,January 6, the twelfth day of Christmas, is Epiphany. Some churches celebrate Epiphany as the night the Wise Men visited Jesus, while others commemorate Jesus' baptism.

Most families are so exhausted from the Christmas season, they are reluctant to add another celebration, so consider the following simple ideas to bring Epiphany into your home:

  1. Epiphany, a Greek word, means appearance, to reveal, to show. One symbol of Epiphany is the candle. It shows a light in the darkness. Light one candle in the middle of your dinner table to illustrate Jesus' words in John 12:46, “I have come into the world as a light, so that no one who believes in me should stay in darkness.”

  2. To commemorate Jesus' baptism, remember the baptismal dates of each family member. Is there a baptismal gown your family passes on to future generations? Get it out and display it all day. Any stories to share? While you're eating dinner together, discuss why baptism is meaningful.

  3. Wrap three small boxes and label them: frankincense, gold, myrrh. Talk about why the Wise Men presented those gifts.

      • Frankincense: As the name implies, it was incense used in religious ceremonies, an offering to God. This shows that Jesus is true God.

      • Gold: A valued metal, gold was a sign of royalty. Jesus is King.

      • Myrrh: Used in burial preparations, this showed that Jesus would die for all of mankind. He was a man who could die, but no ordinary man could take the place of all people. Jesus is both God and man at the same time.

These are simple, yet meaningful ways for your family to remember Epiphany. Make it a part of your annual holiday celebration.
