Hurdles or Walls? Jump or Put on Your Wall-Climbing Gear

I'm working on my goals, as you know, and decided to weigh in every Saturday.

I've been good with food this week.  Self-control, lots of veggies, and all that stuff.  Not much exercise, though. I feel pretty good and expected to have lost a pound or two.

You guessed it - I gained a pound.

What a reward for my healthy eating!

But, you see, I'm used to this.  This has happened to me so many times, that I know what my choices are.  I can give up or see this as a hurdle.  Now, I'm the type of person who can't jump high, so I'm not good with hurdles.  In the past, I've given up on occasions like this.  Not for very long, mind you, but I've done it.

Not this time.  Not the first week!!

This is a hurdle. I will jump higher next week, and I will be rewarded for my efforts.  I will!

Let me propose one other way to look at this "problem."

Since this has happened to me time and time again, it really seems more like a wall than a hurdle.  You know the type - you do what you're supposed to and nothing happens.  The person next to you does the same thing, except she confesses that she had beer and pizza (a whole one!) one day.  And, she loses five pounds!  Oh, it just makes you have to grin and bear it.  You're truly happy for the woman - who wouldn't be happy to eat like that and lose weight - but you wish it were you.

I get it.   Been there, done that.

So, this may be more of a wall, then.  What do you do when you run up to a wall?

  • Do you stop and cry? (yeah, I've done that!)
  • Do you give up and decide to live there? (done that, too.)
  • Do you keep running into it and wonder why you get a bloody nose? (no comment.)
  • Or, do you strap on your wall-climbing gear and start scaling the wall, no matter how high it is and how long it takes you?  That's what I'm attempting now.  I've got my gear on and I'm going up!
