Hovland Hears a Who

The girls and I went to see Horton Hears a Who today. I like Dr. Seuss, and I'm one of those book snobs who almost always says, "The book was better than the movie." I confess that I usually look for faults in every movie that is based on a book.

I haven't read Horton for a long time, so I couldn't do that on this one, but I was prepared to gripe about Jim Carrey. He's played so many ridiculous, over-the-top, zany characters, I fully expected to see the same type of thing in this movie. I was pleasantly surprised.

Mr. Carrey, Carol Burnett, and all the other folks did a great job (in my opinion.) Horton is such a lovable elephant. You can't help but like the guy! He's naive, imaginative, and thinks the best of everyone.  What a great character!

As a reader (and writer) I fully appreciated that the main characters were more fully developed than you might expect. The "bad guys" aren't just bad.  They show their insecurities and pain, not just their evilness. The "good guys" aren't infallible.

I'm not the best reviewer, but I enjoyed the movie.

(Probably would've enjoyed it more if I wouldn't have had the jumbo soda!)
