Saturday's Book Recommendation: Fire Prevention Week

For today's recommendation, I'm going to give you a list of books that relate to fires and/or fire prevention.  The descriptions and age suggestions are my thoughts, not the publisher's, based on what I thought when I looked at each book.


 

Historic Fires:

The Great Chicago Fire of 1871 by Kay Melchisedech Olson – A graphic novel (think comic book style) recommended for 3-6th graders.

The Great Chicago Fire by L.L. Owens – Did Mrs. O’Leary’s cow really start one of the most famous fires in history? Recommended for 4-8th graders.

Into the Firestorm by Deborah Hopkinson – A novel of the 1906 fire in San Francisco recommended for 6-8th graders.

The Great San Francisco Earthquake and Fire by Michael Burgan – A graphic novel recommended for 3-6th graders.

Uprising by Margaret Peterson Haddix – A novel based on the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory Fire in New York recommended for 7-8th graders.

The Triangle Shirtwaist Factory Fire by Jessica Gunderson – A graphic novel recommended for 3-6th graders.

 

Poetry:

Central Heating: poems about fire and warmth by Marilyn Singer – A small poetry collection recommended for 6-8th graders.

 

Picture Books:

Fred the Firefighter by Felicity Brooks - An Usborne book for young children. Recommended for preschool – 2nd graders.

Firefirghter Frank by Monica Wellington – Follow Frank through his firefighting day. Recommended for preschool – 2nd graders.

The Fire Cat by Esther Averill – A classic book for early readers or young listeners recommended for preschool through 2nd graders.

My Mom is a Firefighter by Lois G. Grambling – A colorful book about a female role model recommended for preschool through 2nd graders.

A Day in the Life of a Firefighter by Linda Hayward – Beginning readers can follow a firefighter through his day at work. Recommended for Kindergarten – 2nd graders.

A Day in the Life of a Firefighter by Heather Adamson – A question and answer format helps young children learn more about a firefighter’s day.  Recommended for preschool – 3rd graders.

Spark the Firefighter by Stephen Krensky – What happens when a fire-breathing dragon volunteers to be a firefighter? Recommended for preschool – 4th graders.

Liam’s Watch: A Strange Story of the Great Chicago Fire by Pamela Dell – This picture book is for older readers. Recommended for 3rd – 6th graders.

 

Books for Young Independent Readers:

Battling Blazes by Lisa Thompson – Have you got what it takes to be a firefighter? Find out in this book. Recommended for 2nd – 5th graders.


 

Something for the Adults:

Thoughts on Fire: Life Lessons of a Volunteer Firefighter by Dr. Frank McCluskey – A philosophical view of his life as a firefighter, Dr. McCluskey draws lessons we can apply to our lives.  Recommended for adults.
