Teacher Tip Tuesday: 7 Things to do on a Snow Day

We have a snow day today. Yay!

So, what's a teacher to do on a snow day? Since I saw this one coming, I COULD have brought home work to correct or lesson plans to create.  However, I did not. I brought home boxes to start packing for our upcoming move. Since other teachers won't need to do the same, let's brainstorm some things teachers can do on a snow day:

1. Sleep in, if you can. I'm usually up too early to be able to sleep in. They don't call snow days at 4:30 a.m., so I just stay up. This time, they had already called two hours late the night before, so I had an advantage. I slept in.

2. Treat your family to a hot breakfast. How often do you have a quick cold breakfast as you hurriedly get ready to go? This morning, you have time. If you enjoy cooking, you may want to whip up some pancakes or waffles. Hopefully you have sausage or bacon on hand. Mmmm! Delish!

3. Bake.  Since Christmas is coming, I have supplies to make cashew brittle and cookies. Last time we had two-hour late start, I made Chex's Muddy Buddies. Now if my family would not eat all the goodies, I might have some to share at Christmastime. Even if it's not holiday time, this is a great activity for a snow day. Warm cookies or muffins on a snowy day is a treat.

4. Relax. Make a mug of hot chocolate, browse your video collection, and melt into your recliner. Again, since it's holiday time here, I want to watch at least one Christmas video today. In January or February, when I might be sick of the snow and cold, a summer movie might be the ticket.

5. Enjoy the snow. After you've shoveled or blown the snow, enjoy it! Make a snowman, go sledding with your kids, grab your cross-country skis or snowshoes. When's the last time you made a snow angel? Although shoveling alone is good exercise, it's not nearly as fun as the other ideas I listed.

6. Clean a closet.  Well, you can clean anything, but if your house is in okay condition, this would be a great day to tear into a closet. Gut it, sort it, and put it back together.  If you would like tips on cleaning in general, visit FlyLady.

7. Do teacher stuff online. If you truly can't resist acting like a teacher today, this is a good time to browse the internet. Find lesson plans to go with the next unit you will be teaching. Look for book bargains for your literature circle. Network with other teachers. Email comrades you haven't talked to in months or years.  Do the things you wouldn't do at school, because it would take too much of your valuable class time.
