Teacher Tip Tuesday: Are You Honoring Your Temple?
1 Corinthians 6:19 - Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God? You are not your own . . .
How's your temple? I'm talking about your physical body. Do you ignore it until it aches and begs for attention?
Or do you honor God by honoring His temple - your body?
As a teacher, you are busy making lesson plans, correcting papers, refereeing student conflicts, fending off parents, pleasing the principal, and trying to have a home life! So, how do you find time to keep that body in a shape that not only keeps you working effectively, but actually honors God.
A lot of people who are busy (like you) go into what they think is maintenance mode. They decide to just "go with the flow" and treat things as they come up. Others actually plan to take advantage of their body (abuse it) until it breaks. If you spend too many late night stressing over bills, or too many hours with your behind planted in an office chair behind your desk, your body may be beyond "honor" so long that there may be things you can no longer treat with a pill or an extra hour of sleep.
I am concerned that diabetes or heart disease may rob you of pleasure on this earth that God gave you. You may not be able to glorify God if you are exhausted from not enough sleep or have chronic health problems. How many years can you teach God's children if you become disabled from a preventable problem?
I'm not talking about the crosses we may be asked to bear, like car accidents, genetic issues, and the like. Sometimes God allows us to suffer. Other times we bring it on ourselves.
I know it takes a little more effort, but I'm told that it's worth it.
I joined a health club this past week. I was willing to sacrifice some of my paycheck and my time to help repair my temple (it's in disrepair!) What are you willing to do to maintain or improve your temple? Find a workout buddy, go for daily walks, eat better, take vitamins, visit the doctor, or dust off those exercise DVD's? You're not selfish to give your body some time. You're working on God's temple, so you can serve Him and others better!
