Saturday's Book Recommendation: The Train of States by Peter Sis
I checked this book out this summer and couldn't help but think of the 3/4th grade class at our school. I could just imagine their teacher using this book in class. Each page gives rich visual clues (and written facts) about each state. The reader could spend several minutes on each page or read it over and over again.
Actually, I would love to see the book taken apart and made into a long train that would stretch across the walls of the classroom. It would make a great poster - especially if it is posted at students' eye level. This book would be great for students who learn visually.
I think it would be neat to leave out the car for your classroom's state and then assign them to draw it, based on the other cars. You could give them an outline similar to the other cars, and let them fill in the rest. That would work well for my classroom where we study just our state.
Go one step further and have them design a car that embodies the symbols and spirit of your town, your school, or their families.
Hmmm. Maybe I should've posted this on Tuesday, for Teacher Tips. Since I missed Tuesday, I guess this can count for that, too, right??
