Saturday's Book Recommendation: Nineteen Minutes by Jodi Picoult

This is an adult book - not recommended for young audiences. Although there is some sexual content and profanity, you may want to allow or encourage high schoolers to read it. Some of them read that type of book already, so if you don't mind it, please hand them this book and tell them they must read it. The theme and content are THAT good!

Nineteen Minutes follows a boy who is sensitive and unaware of how to relate to other kids throughout his school years. He becomes the butt of jokes and hostility from his first day of school. You also get insight from the another student (a girl in the popular crowd) and some of the parents. You can see how the joking and teasing escalates and becomes crippling for the boy and how he has less and less power to control anything in his life. A school shooting occurs, killing several and injuring even more.  Through flashbacks and courtroom drama, the story unfolds. It's a very powerful story in Picoult's typical style (which I love!)

Hear the author talk about the story behind Nineteen Minutes (it's #7 on the list.)

I recommend this book for young adults and parents of teenagers.
