Saturday's Book Recommendation: The Legend of the Easter Egg by Lori Walburg
I've been reading other books lately that I wouldn't necessarily recommend to Christian families, so I thought I'd better not let another week go by without a review.
I stopped by my local library and checked out a book I've read before: The Legend of the Easter Egg. Lori Walburg weaves the resurrection account into a fictional story about a boy and his sick sister. As he worries about her health and possible death, he learns about Jesus' death and resurrection.
One criticism about the Easter egg is that it comes from pagan tradition. That may be true, but the Resurrection itself is NOT from the pagan tradition. I think we need to be careful when we weave fiction with non-fiction. Be careful that symbolism (the Easter egg) points to the Truth. I think it can, and I believe Lori Walburg did a good job of using storytelling to link the two. This is not a cutesy Peter Rabbit version of Easter. It's more serious, and yet not scary. So, I think the balance is pretty well done.
I'm one of those Christians who likes to take worldly things and show how they either came from God or point to God. So, I do like using Easter eggs, Jack o' lanterns, shamrocks, etc. NOT simply as a nice, cute, secular decoration, but as a lesson about the True God. If you know the stories, the connections, you can make a witness to those around you who don't. Jesus did this all the time, through parables.
