Book Recommendation: Here Comes The Garbage Barge! by Jonah Winter
When I first saw this picture book, it was on a recommended reading list, so I had to check it out. If I had seen it at the library or bookstore, I probably never would have picked it up. I'm kind of drawn to the "cute" picture books, you know. And, there's just not much cuteness to garbage.
When I read the book, however, I came to appreciate it. I think the illustrations (made with real garbage) fit the book perfectly. The story itself is perfect for early elementary students and older elementary students. It would be a great jumping-off point for a class about caring for the earth. It's not a "tree hugger" book, but it would lead to a great discussion about how and why the recycling movement has become popular and useful today.
I can also see a fun art project made from garbage after studying the illustrations by Red Nose Studio.

I do not literally paint that table, but the emotion it produces upon me.
